As you might imagine, Lyndon B. Johnson is "kind of a big deal" here in Central Texas. The LBJ Presidential Library and Museum is worth a visit if you're ever in Austin.
The exhibits of LBJ's early years are fascinating. Johnson took a break from his studies at Southwest Texas State Teachers' College (now Texas State University in San Marcos) to teach at a "Mexican" school in South Texas (Texas schools were segregated then along ethnic as well racial lines).
Johnson's students were so poor that he convinced his parents to buy basic hygiene items for them. The experience left an impression; Johnson returned to SWTSTC in San Marcos to sign the Higher Education Act in 1965.
